PACC Member Ken Fowkes has been awarded 1st place in the Abstract/Adult category of the 2020 Peninsula Photo Contest for his image, Pondside.

There was a virtual award ceremony on Thursday, May 21.

Don Feria, one of the judges, said:   Pondside is a fresh and inventive interpretation of a scene that has possibly been seen by countless eyes. The forced movement of the vertical play against the natural horizontal pattern is executed brilliantly, and the uneven pattern of the darker, wood-like lines adds a visual tension that allows the mind's eye to resolve the scene, thus including the viewer in the artistic process.

Ken explains:  Pondside was taken with a quick upward flick of a long lens. Camera motion has blended the plants growing at a pond’s edge with the light reflecting from its surface. Details are erased, inviting us to explore the scene through color, shape, and texture.

Ken is a two-time winner:  The Shaman's Horse was awarded 1st place in the 2018 Abstract category. He also would like to remind members that PACC's longtime member, great friend, and passionate photographer Laurie Naiman won 1st place in that category last year for his image, Hitchcock's Fork, taken with his iPhone at a local outdoor cafe:

The Peninsula Photo Contest is an annual contest organized by the Palo Alto Art Center, the Palo Alto Weekly, and The Six Fifty.  It is open to all individuals who live, work or attend school in any city within the 650 area code.

Winning photos and those selected for exhibition will be displayed at the Palo Alto Art Center from September 12 to November 15, 2020.

Pondside

The EcoCenter on Embarcadero Road will present an exhibition, Baylands and Beyond – Natural Northern California, comprising photographs by PACC member Chris Stevens-Yu.

The exhibition has been postponed until later this year, tentatively August and September, due to concerns about the spread of COVID-19.

First Light at the Baylands

The Palo Alto Camera Club will present a print exhibition of members’ works at the Palo Alto Art Center.

Member Jim Colton and his wife Mary Jo are photographers who love the outdoors, especially the wilderness. After visiting much of the wilderness in the lower 48 states and in many other countries, they found some of the most remote and most scenic wilderness in Alaska. In July of 2018 they visited all eight national parks in Alaska and photographed all aspects of their journey. The prints on display through February are all from their Alaska collection.

Their seventh annual juried exhibition, “Pleasing to the Palette,” features images of food in art selected by juror Maria Medua, director of the SFMOMA Artists Gallery. Judy Doherty's image of asparagus spears is featured in the poster for this show and it is part of her thesis work from UC Berkeley Extension Visual Art Certificate program.

"Come and view Visual Feast, a fine art food photography solo exhibit by award-winning chef and photographer Judy Doherty, AOS, BS, PC II. This 25-piece show features award-winning conceptual and still life photography from farmer's markets from Sonoma to Capitola. Each photo will bring to life a different memory and seasonal feeling of beautiful California produce.

Reception Sat Feb 4 from 1-4 pm at Avenue 25 Gallery in San Mateo (MAP). Meet the artist and learn how she styled and captured the pieces. Refreshments will be served.

Two images by members Elaine Heron and Dan Quinn ("Struggle" and "Twisted Cedar" respectively) have been accepted in the Center for Photographic Art's (CPA) 2016 International Juried Competition.

The winners will be announced at the CPA gallery exhibit in Carmel's Sunset Center on Sat Nov 12, 2016. There will be a lecture by judge Linda Lehtinen Phd from 4-5 pm, followed by a reception from 5-7 pm.

Although this is not strictly about Jim Colton's photography, it is in my opinion a 'newsworthy' article (for the membership) about one of our club's pre-eminent members. Over several years Jim (a Stanford alumnus) took upon himself to evaluate (and photograph) all 25 of the country's college golf courses featured in Golf Week Magazine's annual review of 'the best'. {A PDF of the source article in Golf Week Magazine, Sept 5, 2016 will be sent separately with the e-announcement to the club.

Jennifer Fraser's image of the Mesquite Dunes in Death Valley was just published in Outdoor Photographer Magazine's annual Black-and-White issue (see accompanying photo of the magazine).

Jennifer, still enjoying her "15 minutes of fame ...", had this to say:

"Here's the original text for the Outdoor Photographer article! What other members might find of interest is that the editor contacted me (first time that ever happened!) saying she "came across your image 'Dune Waves' in our magazine's online gallery and would like to feature it in the Behind The Shot section of our August 2016 Black-and-White special issue."

I guess the takeaway is that it's good to get one's images out on the web. Even if they don't win prizes; someone might see them!"

"Right light, right place, right equipment, right settings - how many of these conditions ever happen by chance? When all come together by luck, it really seems like magic. That wasn’t the case with this image, however; this was an image I “stalked”.

To prepare for this image, I planned a trip to Mesquite Dunes near Stovepipe Wells in midweek of early Spring, hoping I’d avoid the crowds. The afternoon before the shot, I drove by the dunes to figure out where I should park the next morning, since I knew it would be dark, and how long it would take to drive from my campsite in order to get there at least an hour before dawn to hike out and set up. I drove back, checked the chart for sunrise time and set my alarm clock.

The next early morning I pocketed my Rocket Air Blaster* in case of blowing sand and headed out. I drove to the site counting the miles, parked, turned on my headlamp and walked out in the direction of the dunes. The only factor I hadn’t accounted for was the difficulty of trudging up dunes in deep sand for half a mile, but I certainly was alone! Fortunately, a wind had come up the previous night, blowing away many of the footprints, and as the predawn light seeped into the sky, the ridges in the sand began to appear in deep shadow.

I set up my tripod and discovered that the lower the tripod, the more dramatic the ridges showed. Focusing a third of the way into the distance to maximize depth of field, I began shooting, making sure to bracket the shots. Every minute the changing light created new angles, new shadows, new compositions, and I was dizzy with the possibilities. When the sun came over the mountain, the parking lot began to fill up, as hikers and photographers flooded in. That was OK - I was packing up by then.

It was certainly one of the most magical photographic experiences I’ve had. The shots required very little post-processing in Photoshop: converting to black and white, adjusting the shadows for a true black …a nd deciding whether or not to keep the tiny rock in the shadow on the left. I kept it."

*Rocket Air Blaster

The Avenidas Rose Kleiner Center provides adult day care for seniors suffering from Alzheimer’s, dementia, Parkinson’s, strokes or other chronic conditions. The Executive Director of the Center is Tom Pamilla, a long time friend of the Palo Alto Camera Club. Tom believed that his patients would benefit from art on the walls of the Center and requested that the Camera Club have some of its members display some of their photographs at the Center. Several members now have their photographs on display and Tom reports that the patients find the displays interesting and uplifting. Tom is very appreciative of PACC providing art for his patients. In addition to being able to display your work, this is also an opportunity to help bring some joy to the patients at the Center. The patients are at the Center until 2:30 every weekday. Therefore we have access to the Center from 2:30 to 5:00 every weekday to hang photographs or to bring visitors to see our photographs. If you would like to exhibit at the Rose Kleiner Center, contact Jim Colton.

Member Ira Greenberg has curated and mounted an exhibit on the theme of Trees, now on display at his synagogue in south Palo Alto (Etz Chayim, 4161 Alma St, MAP). Of interest, the Hebrew name of the synagogue stands for 'tree of life'.  Ira invited entries from members of the congregation, and selected, printed, framed and mounted 10 prints along with an introductory panel in the main hallway at the synagogue. An image of a Masai man by member Stan Chism received a 2nd place award in the Portraits category of the PA Weekly's 2013 Photo Contest. In the PA Weekly's 2013 Photo Contest, two images by member Deborah Plumley received awards. "Speeding from Oakland to San Francisco" won 3rd place in the Bay Area category, and "Shell Spiral" received an Honorable Mention in the Views Beyond the Bay Area category. These images, along with the other winning images, may be seen here.

All winning prints will be on display at the Palo Alto Art Center (1313 Newell Rd) from Mar 5 thru Apr 6, 2014.

Deborah states: 

"Although I photograph in many other genres (such as landscape), I am particularly drawn to “macro photography” – photographing subjects up close.  Close-up photography enables the viewer to appreciate:

o  the beauty of form, texture and pattern

o  the power of color or monochrome (single color, such as black and white, or single hue, such as teal or rose).

The subjects include natural subjects – flowers, nautilus shells, and objects found on my favorite beaches – and also raindrops on a car (illuminated by the neon sign from a diner).

Dan Hartford images from Peru are being used as the cover photo for the current edition of Insights Magazine. The IFPRI (International Food Policy Research Institute - http://www.ifpri.org/)magazine is currently online and the print edition is expected in a couple of weeks.

A print entitled 'Waiting Heads' by member Elaine Heron was accepted in a curated exhibit at the Coastal Arts League in Half Moon Bay, running from Dec 13 to Jan 19, 2014. The public is invited to an Awards Ceremony & Reception on Sat December 14, 2013 from 5-7 PM. All accepted entries may be viewed HERE.

Member Bill Jackson will be having a solo exhibit of his TIMBER photography abstracts in San Francisco in December.  Hosted by Paolo Mejia Gallery, the exhibit will be held at Caffe Union, 1830 Union Street, San Francisco from December 3rd through January 6th. .  

The images in this TIMBER series are of cut and fallen trees from California’s Sierra Nevada mountains, modified in post-processing to create something different from the original. A reception will be held on Sat Dec 7th from 5:00pm to 8:00pm.  Music will be provided by the Jack Newton Jazz band. Members and partners/friends are encouraged to attend.

Prints by members Deborah Plumley and Judy Kramer will be included in the "Landscapes, Seascapes, and Urbanscapes" art exhibit (juried by Timon Sloane) at the Pacific Art League October 4--24. Dan Hartford is having his first solo show “The American Southwest and the People of Peru” at the Garden Fresh restaurant at 460 Ramona St. (between Lytton and University) in downtown Palo Alto and can be seen during their business hours. Images include  scene’s of the American Southwest as well as portraits of the people of Peru.

Show ends end of October 2013.

Bill states: “I am pleased to share that eight of my TIMBER series abstracts are currently on display at Philz Coffee 3191 Middlefield Road (Midtown. near Loma Verde) in Palo Alto and will remain  there through October.  In December, this exhibit will move to San Francisco as a collaborative presentation by Paolo Mejia Art Gallery and Caffe Union.

Two prints by Peter Paluzzi are in the “Photography as Art” exhibition at the Stanford Cummings Sub-Gallery. The exhibition features works by participants in the Photography as Art Program and runs from August 16th to August 30th. Gallery hours are from 9:00 A. M. to 5:00 P. M. Monday through Friday. Member Glenn Edens will be having a solo exhibit of 47 prints at Keeble and Shuchat Gallery, entitled "Places, Spaces, Marks & Arcs". Places shares his passion for the natural landscape and the unique beauty of the American West. Spaces explores his fascination with architecture and constructed spaces. Marks examines signage and the defacing act of graffiti as art. Arcs presents a fanciful study of pure light and color.

The show runs from August 15 - September 11, 2013, with an opening reception on Sat Aug 17 from 2 - 5 pm. The gallery is located above the main store at 290 S. California Avenue in midtown Palo Alto.

Member Judy Kramer will be having a solo exhibit of images from a recent trip to Guinea in West Africa to observe and photograph a Kiwanis/UNICEF tetanus immunization campaign. Titled "A Photographic Journey in West Africa: Witness to a campaign to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus," the exhibit will run at the Pacific Art League  from September 6 to 26, with the opening reception on Friday, September 6, 5:30--8 pm. The location is at 227 Forest Avenue, Palo Alto. Parking available under City Hall.

Member Jim Colton will be having an exhibit of 12 prints from his series entitled “Portrait of Southeast Asia” at the Owatonna Art Center in Minnesota from Aug. 4-25, 2013. Owatonna, Jim's home town, is 60 miles south of Minneapolis. His late mother Lillian Colton is a well-known 'crop artist' in Minnesota.

"I have been fascinated with Cowboys and the Old West since I was young.  About twenty years ago I became aware that this way of life seemed to be gradually disappearing.  And then I discovered the passion that many small towns had for the Cowboy lifestyle.  It started with Taylorsville, a town of 250 in the Sierras between Quincy and Greenville.  Using the modern technology of the internet, I learned of more small California towns that put on a rodeo once a year, usually between late spring and early fall. The small arenas put the spectators close to the action, relatively easy pickins for a 300mm lens.

For the Stevenson House exhibit, I have selected eight pictures, which depict several of the classic rodeo events:  bull riding, bronc riding, steer wrestling and calf roping. The exhibit  will run through the end of November.

There will be a reception and presentation for the residents of Stevenson House on Saturday August 3, 2013 at 7:00PM.  I would be pleased to see any Club members who can make it."

Bart will provide an overview of DSLR video capabilities and limitations, gear including editing software, audio mixing and music, briefly cover cellphone and tablet use also. He will show you how you can use short videos to support your stills, introduce your work or yourself and better tell a story.  

At it's core filmmaking is using images to tell a story, if a picture is worth a thousand words short clips are novels!  

You will also meet the GoPro, a tiny go anywhere video camera that can also shoot stills, it is a tool every photographer should be aware of.  

This will be an interactive session with plenty of time for discussion.  We will see a few video clips and shorts shot on tablets, the GoPro and DSLRs.

Bart's introduction to photography was borrowing his dad's Super 8 film camera to make movies with his friends in high school. Torn between wanting to be a cinematographer and a marine biologist, he listened to his practical father and studied engineering and business, settling for still photography as a hobby. He recently returned to the classroom, completing the Producing and Directing Program at Berkeley Digital Film Institute. 

He now divides his time between stills and video, and has found a way to incorporate both into professional and volunteer work.  He is consulting for a start up near night vision camera company founded by an Academy Award winning nature cinematographer, assisting with marketing and managing a project that modifies the popular GoPro camera, adding longer length massive depth of field lenses. 

His volunteer work includes The Ocean Ambassadors Program- helping to promote California's new network of marine protected areas, he is an on the water naturalist with NOAA's Team Ocean in Monterey and Elkhorn Slough and serves on the Citizen Advisory Board of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. Bart is one of only a handful of people to complete the 25 mile solo unsupported crossing of Monterey Bay by kayak, a feat he accomplished in 2010.

Two images by Bill Jackson, one of which is shown here (Hurricane in Havana), were accepted into “Sustainable Silicon Valley’s Annual Summit 2013”, a component of which is a display of art that best represents the theme of “sustainability”.

He also shared the following: “I had an image in last year’s Summit as well (which was also used for the cover of the agency’s brochure).  I encourage any club member who supports earth-based sustainable solutions to enter your work that is consistent with this theme in next year’s Summit.  It is held in May of each year and is, in my opinion, a worthy cause."

Sustainable SV Summit’s goals as stated on its website:  “In the areas of water, energy and smart technology, the Summit catalyzes action for a more sustainable future by bringing together leaders from many sectors to understand barriers and exchange insights. Build bridges and find opportunities for collaboration and innovation, breakthroughs, results.”

This image of a snorting elephant (entitled 'SPF 100') is by member Ira Greenberg, who has dual membership in the Sunnyvale Photo Club and the PACC. Ira captured the photo on a safari to San Diego.  The Sunnyvale Photo Club displays one of its members' photos at the library every month.

Member Elaine Heron's image entitled "Cows Coming Home" will be in the 'Light and Dark, Photography Now' exhibit running May 3 to 30 at the Pacific Art League.  It is located at  227 Forest Avenue, Palo Alto, CA 94301, just around the corner from the previous location.  The opening reception is the first Friday event on May 3, 5:30 to 8:00. "This past summer, the Palo Alto Art Center invited photographers to  photograph the 'Double Take' reed sculpture on the Art Center’s grounds.  Two outside judges then chose images to appear in a book published by the Art Center. It was a fun project and I was fortunate to have three images chosen for the book.  Attached is one of them.  My wife, stepdaughter and soon to be stepson-in-law donned gorilla suits and I photographed them.  The printed book is available for sale in the Art Center’s gift shop."

I've been going to the Death Valley area with my camera and family about 1-3 times a year since around 1992. After taking several thousand film shots of the iconic sand dunes and spring wildflowers in the last years of the 20th century I transitioned to digital photography and began looking for other subjects and areas of interest. This took me beyond Death Valley National Park to areas that are less well-known, such as the neighboring small villages of Shoshone, Tecopa, and Death Valley Junction, along with a few 'ghost' towns such as Darwin and Rhyolite. A solo exhibit of 17 of my prints from these areas took place at the Tecopa Artist Group Gallery in Tecopa Hot Springs in 2009.

Some of these prints, along with newer ones, will be part of the Palo Alto Camera Club presence at the Stevenson House in Palo Alto from April 27 thru July, 2013.

Laurie Naiman's print entitled "A Helping Hand" was accepted in the permanent art collection at Stanford Medical Center, and is on display at Lucile Packard Children's Hospital (1st floor across from the Bass Center, between the Gift Shop and the Auditorium on the inside wall.) The same print was in the PACC group exhibit at Pacific Art League in June 2012. 'Aspen Leaves and Snow, Eastern Sierra', a print by member Vidya Narasimhan has been chosen to be part of the upcoming Yosemite Renaissance 28 exhibit.

The exhibit will run from Feb 22 thru to May 5, 2013 at the Yosemite Museum Gallery. The artists' reception will be held there on Sun Feb 24.

Images by members Vardan Aroustamian and Shinnan Kiang have been accepted in the 2013 Juried Exhibition of the Center for Photographic Art in Carmel. Elaine Heron is one of 37 artists accepted into the "Handcrafted and Through the Lens: Nature Interpreted" exhibit at the Filoli Center in Woodside, July 10 through October 21, 2012. Her print is entitled 'Hold Your Trunk This Way'.

A print by member Bill Jackson entered in a competition w/ the theme "Portraits" held by Santa Fe Photographic Workshops was among 50 images accepted for publication in a book to be published by them this summer. The competition attracted 3,743 images by 960 photographers from 32 countries. DETAILS

Members Caroline Lambert and Judy Kramer were both finalists, receiving honorable mentions in the Plant Life Category of the 2011 Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District photo contest. Images on left (in order) and rest of results can be seen here.

This image by member Bill Jackson, entitled 'Planet Earth', was among those accepted in an art exhibit accompanying the biannual Summit of the non-profit Sustainable Silicon Valley held on May 24, 2012 at Santa Clara University. The Summit’s theme was “Global Trade and Regional Resiliency”. DETAILS

Elaine Heron and Judy Kramer each have 3 prints accepted in the June juried exhibit at the Pacific Art League, "Animals: Facts, Fairy Tales, and Fantasy." Member Barbara Tuffli's image “Twisting Edges” (of Yucca gloriosa variegata) was just published in the Garden Club of America's online magazine, 'focus'. (As of May 2, there is no link). A larger view of this image may be seen on the winners page of our June 2011 print competition.

9 prints by 5 club members (Branko Radonjic, Deborah Plumley, Edward Nunez, Marvin Wax & Laurie Naiman) have been selected from over 1500 entries to the2012 Michael H. Kellicutt International Photo Show at the Coastal Art League Museum in Half Moon Bay. A public reception will be held there on Sat July 7, 2012 from 5-8 pm. Images of 3 club members (Plumley, Wax & Naiman) were among those receiving final awards.

4 of the above prints will be hung on the wall (amid a total of 45) and 5 will be shown in a book at the museum.

Member Elaine Heron's image entitled 'Golf Ball Iceberg' received a Merit Award in the Seascape/Water category among the 2012 Single Image Contest Winners in the Feb 2012 issue of B&W magazine. The online image can be viewed here.

Member Hiroshi Suzuki has 8 images from his recent project entitled "Winter Shadow" included in the group show, "Crafted at Rayko"
at Rayko Photo Center in San Francisco. His images are platinum-palladium prints taken by a large format camera and exhibited in the side gallery. Opening reception Sat Mar 24, 6-8 pm. From Mar 15 thru Apr 6.

Seventeen of Judy Kramer's landscape and wildflower images appear in a newly published book from UC Press, titled "California Native Gardening: A Month-by-Month Guide," by Helen Popper. It is available at amazon.com. 

Also, the North American Nature Photography Association (NANPA) has just published (Mar 2) its 2012 Expressions magazine with two of Judy's images (among the top 250). The magazine can be purchased online (print or digital) at MagCloud.

And ... two her images have been accepted in the April "Secret Gardens" juried exhibit of the Pacific Art League. Exhibit dates are April 6--26, with the First Friday reception on April 6, 5:30--8 pm, 668 Ramon Street, Palo Alto. The two images are Seed Silouette (digital winner in January) and Bee Treat, on left.

Two images by Judy Kramer have received honorable mentions in the Anza-Borrego Foundation's 2012 Desert Photo Competition in the category of Desert Plants. Link to follow.

Two images from member Mitch Nelles' 'Industrial Design' portfolio were accepted in the 2011 Year-end Gallery of Lenswork Magazine (Nov-Dec issue, #97)

This snapshot of a 1964 Dodge Dart convertible (w/ author Dr Richard Franke) by member Duane Stevenson was taken on the road between Albuquerque, NM and Needles, AZ way back when, and published in Automobile Magazine (in their Cross Country Classic section.

Two images by member Judy Kramer are among 250 being honored by NANPA, the North American Nature Photography Association, in their annual Showcase competition. The photos will be published in their 2012 Expressions magazine. Larger views of these images can be seen on the NANPA website at 'Beetle' and Skink'.

This print of penguins diving into the ocean by member Elaine Heron won the Gold Medal (Wildlife) in the PSA 2011 annual competition. Five of her other entries were accepted into the online catalog.

 Member Charles Anselmo's solo exhibit entitled "Deconstructions: La Habana" - Images of Cuba on Paper and Silk at PHOTO Fine Art Gallery in Oakland is coming to a close this Sat Sept 17. Charles will be speaking at a closing reception from 4-6 pm that day.

Member Gil Draper is having a solo show of 34 prints entitled "Flowers Plus" from Aug 14 to Sept 3, 2011 at Allegro Framing and Art, located in the Ladera Shopping Center - 3130 Alpine Rd, Portola Valley Ca 94028.  Gallery hours are Tuesday – Saturday 11am to 6 pm.

Among over 1600 images entered in the 2011 Michael Kellicutt International Photo Show competition at the Coastal Arts League Museum in Half Moon Bay, images of three club members have been recognized. Edward Nunez will have 3 prints on the wall, and Bill Jackson and Laurie Naiman will each have one print in the Display Book. A reception and awards ceremony will be held at the museum on Sat July 9 from 5-9 pm, and is open to all.

 

Member Barbara Tuffli’s image “Twisting Edges” of Yucca gloriosa variegata leaves received first place in the macrophotography class, “Edgy”, at the Visions 2011 Flower Show: California on the Cutting Edge, in Carmel, CA. Garden Club of America (GCA) photographers from across the U.S. were invited to enter the show sponsored by five G.C.A. clubs from the Bay Area (winners not listed on website).

Two of member Judy Kramer's wildflower images received awards in the 2010 Waterton Wildflower Festival Photo Contest. The contest is limited to images taken in Waterton Lakes National Park, Alberta, Canada, during the wildflower festival, June 18--26, 2010.

This print entitled 'I Like Lichen' and one entitled 'Target Practice' by member Judy Kramer were accepted for exhibit at a juried Pacific Art League show entitled "Works on Paper" running from Feb. 4–24. There will be an opening reception on Friday evening, Feb. 4, 5:30--8 pm.

Member Judy Kramer received three awards in the 2011 Anza-Borrego Desert Photo Contest, sponsored by the Anza-Borrego Foundation and Institute. The awards are: 
Morning Light - 3rd Place, Desert Landscapes;
Cholla Greets the Dawn - Honorable Mention, Desert Landscapes;
