“The downside (of competitions) is the judging most often caters to the photographs which are familiar and already acceptable because they have been done over and over by so many people. The object seems to be not to follow one’s own vision but to be able to accomplish scenes like the ones you’ve admired. The scenic barn, weathered wood or rusty iron, rushing water, the colors of sunsets, patterns of farmlands, snorting wild horses, curled hoses, peeling paint, coastlines, On and on. It’s a rare thing to have a surprise there. But we do enjoy each other.” (2007)
